Award-Winning Maylands Residence

Jul 31, 2018

WINNER of 2018 AILA SA Landscape Architecture Award (Gardens)

Our design for this residence builds upon Maylands’s rich gardening tradition - the journey of the old to the new, positively embracing change while honouring what has stood the test of time.

The client’s love and sense of connection to the original rambling cottage garden was the inspiration for the front garden, which we filled with texture and colour. It provides a quiet outdoor place for respite, as well as a sense of arrival to the home.

Across the site, every opportunity to maximise usage of the space was explored, including a lush, shaded southern courtyard that can be accessed from the master bedroom. In contrast to the front display garden, the enclosed courtyard provides an external living space allowing for private gatherings and a physical connection to the landscape.

The rear garden is a wonderfully versatile space, which can be altered and utilised for a variety of functions and responds to the family’s busy life. An elevated deck transitions between indoor and outdoor and allows the family to inhabit the garden all year round. This communal gathering area is where family and friends come together to play, and extends out through the elevated feature tiled pool and Papyrus laden overspill trough, which float above the sunken lawn.

We would like to congratulate the home owners and thank our collaborators Troppo Architects, Enoki Design, Summit Landscapes, Eco Outdoor & Elite Pools who assisted in delivering this stunning residential garden design.
