Willunga Mainstreet Wins

Jul 31, 2018

WINNER of 2018 AILA SA Award of Excellence (Cultural Heritage) & Landscape Architecture Award (Urban Design)

WAX worked for over two years with the local community, City of Onkaparinga, Mulloway Studio, other design professionals to develop the designs for High Street and Main Road. We designed new slate gutters and rain gardens to reflect the creeks that carved into the escarpment of Willunga. The slate paving and layout of the project used the measurements of the Gunter Chain, a historical survey device, which was instrumental in the enclosure and settlement of South Australia. Finally, new gardens were designed using a zig-zag crown-like shape, a whimsical nod to the King of the Mountain status that Willunga Hill has for cyclists around the world.

Although the project has at times been contentious, the transformation has been significant. The various design elements collectively create a richly layered public realm, embedded with history, influenced by the community, contextual and yet contemporary.

Congratulations to our client the City of Onkaparinga and our project team Mulloway Studio, SMEC, Lucid Consulting Australia, Infraplan, Design Flow, Lucas Robins (sculptor), Westly Tully and Jason Balmer (furniture fabrication) who helped develop and deliver the designs.
