Virginia Mainstreet Concept

Working with Intermethod, the project used a collaborative design and consultation process to create an innovative concept plan for Old Port Wakefield Road. Working closely with council, the community, stakeholders and the local school, new designs were prepared for the Mainstreet.

The concept plan re-establishes the Mainstreet as a destination with wide pedestrian-friendly footpaths, increased drainage and Water Sensitive Urban Design techniques. Tree planting and other landscape treatments create an attractive urban landscape with substantial micro-climatic benefits. The introduction of new street furniture and public art helps to increase Virginia Mainstreet as a vibrant destination.

This ‘once in a generation’ project, will meet the needs of the community today as well as the community’s future expectation over the next 30 years. The concept plan represents a piece of legacy infrastructure that challenges pre-existing conditions and creates a new benchmark for the future.
