Revitalising the Port Lincoln foreshore precinct
The final draft concept plan for the Pt Lincoln Foreshore Redevelopment has been released. The redevelopment of the foreshore will transform the city’s coastal edge into a vibrant contemporary waterfront destination.
It will be filled with exciting new recreation areas, playspaces, public realm activation, tourist destinations, and a partial upgrade of the jetty.
The foreshore has always been a popular destination. However, after twenty years since the last major upgrade, the waterfront concept plan represents a significant and long overdue, next step for Port Lincoln. One that will provide ongoing support for the economic and tourism growth that has occurred in the region.
New open spaces will be developed as coastal gardens, plazas and playspaces located in amongst the shade of the magnificent Norfolk Island Pines.
The existing toilets will be reimagined as an impressive viewing deck and amphitheatre. Elevated walkways will provide wheelchair access and unique viewing experiences from which to appreciate the stunning natural beauty of the bay.
Car parks will be modified to increase the public realm, creating shared-use areas that will encourage pedestrian activation and allow opportunities for weekend markets and other events.
A new regional adventure playspace, with integrated nature play elements, will be a significant drawcard. Elevated play pods will provide opportunities for rope climbs, slides and rock scrambles. Water play and misters will cool the area amongst the shade of the Norfolk Island Pines. While basket swings and wheelchair accessible in-ground trampolines demonstrate the inclusive design of the playspace.
Although preliminary discussions have only just begun with Barngarla and other first nations people, the project will explore how the themes of reconciliation and the Barngarla People’s ongoing connection to Country can be represented through the designs, particularly the playspace.
A new basketball half-court, netball ring, skateable plaza, and bouldering wall will create a focal point for recreation along the waterfront. Outdoor ping-pong tables, exercise equipment, and a Fussball table add to the area’s recreational and sports value, creating a miniature Venice Beach for Port Lincoln.
New wombat crossings, public plazas, and footpaths reinforce pedestrian access. Encouraging people to walk, congregate, stay, sit and linger longer.
As part of the jetty upgrade, a new jetty extension is proposed. The new extension provides access to deeper water, enabling tour operators and charters to offer trips from the centre of Port Lincoln, rather than having visitors travel out of the city to the marina.
