Government House Accessibility

Set within one of South Australia’s most significant heritage sites, the Government House entry renewal project redefines access and arrival while respecting the formality and layered history of the building. Delivered in collaboration with Hosking Willis Architecture, G-Force and Robert Bird Group, the project reinforces the enduring architectural and landscape character of the historic grounds, while supporting accessibility and the ongoing civic role of Government House.

A clear and legible movement framework underpins the design. A new driveway and redefined paved connections establish equitable access for users. Universal design principles are embedded throughout, with carefully graded paths, generous thresholds, and integrated handrails that enable ease of movement for visitors of all abilities.

Materiality and detailing respond directly to the heritage context. A restrained palette of Mintaro stone paving, combined with subtle level transitions and refined landscape elements, reinforces the site’s formal architectural language. Contemporary details using brass and precast concrete ensure durability and longevity. New planting, using a modern Australian aesthetic, frames key views, softens edges, and enhances the sense of arrival.
